Our Talk on Navigating the MT Application Process

We recently had the opportunity to share our family’s experience navigating the BFA Musical Theater application process at a local performing arts workshop. It was an incredible evening of shared stories, hard-won advice, and a few laughs about the chaos of audition season.

Why We Gave This Talk

When our daughter first expressed interest in pursuing a BFA in Musical Theater, we had no idea what we were getting into. The sheer volume of schools, the prescreen requirements, the different audition formats — it was overwhelming. We spent months piecing together information from forums, Facebook groups, and word of mouth.

We decided to share what we learned so other families wouldn’t have to start from scratch the way we did.

Key Takeaways

Here are some of the biggest lessons we shared:

  • Start early, but don’t panic. The research phase takes longer than you think. Give yourself at least 6 months before prescreens are due to build your school list.
  • Prescreens are the real bottleneck. Most families focus on the auditions, but the prescreen video is what gets you in the room. Invest time and resources here.
  • Every school is different. Some want two contrasting monologues, some want 32 bars, some want a full song. There is no “one size fits all” approach.
  • Organization is everything. With 15-20 schools, each with different deadlines and requirements, you need a system. Spreadsheets work, but purpose-built tools work better.
  • Trust the process. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. There will be rejections. There will be waitlists. The right program is out there.

The Audience Response

We were genuinely moved by the response. Parents came up afterward sharing their own stories — the stress of coordinating travel for unified auditions, the cost of coaching sessions, the emotional rollercoaster of decision day. It confirmed what we already suspected: this community needs better tools and more shared knowledge.

What’s Next

That talk was actually one of the inspirations for building MyMT Manager. We realized that if we could put all the school research, requirement tracking, and application management into one place, we could save other families hundreds of hours of work.

If you’re just starting this journey, know that you’re not alone. And it does get easier — especially when you’re organized.
